Charles Edward Reeder MM – WW1 – ‘A letter from the front’

Just added – An original 99 year old letter written from the WW1 battlefields near Ypres, Belgium, to his parents & sisters by Charles Edward Reeder MM.

Tragically, 2 months later he was killed by a shell leaving a wife, parents, brothers and sisters behind.

While the content today may seem rather benign, concentrating on his brother Jack’s exploits elsewhere (Mesopotamia) and a burglary at home, he carefully avoids any detail about the situation of his battalion, relying on general comments such as ‘pushing old fritz’ out of existence.

He ends with: ‘I have nothing much in the way of news..’

Sparing his family the brutal truth tells us much about the bravery of soldiers like Charles who believed, rightly or wrongly, they were fighting for King & Country.

Much more information is available on Charles.  Just follow the links by his name in the ‘Wallace/Godwin section’

Thoughts/Comments very welcome..

Mike Wallace Family History website

Welcome!

The idea behind creating this website is to use it as a place to gather, store and share research of my family history.

The title of the site is named after my Great Grandmother, Rose Ann Godwin, daughter of Charles Godwin (1820-1868) and Rose Ann Aldred (1826-1901).

Born in Colchester around 1860, she married my Great Grandfather, John Wallace at St James Church, Church Kirk, near Accrington, Lancashire in 1878.  She died in Oswaldtwistle aged 54 in 1914.

I am fortunate to have some friends and relatives who are assisting me on this journey. I have already received help with photos, stories, reminiscences, newspaper articles, interviews etc to make this site as interesting as possible.

However, if you have any information, photos, stories etc. that you feel would benefit the site then please do not hesitate to contact me.

My areas of interest are: Church, Oswaldtwistle, Accrington, and other    Lancashire areas.
